When choosing your bedroom furniture, it is much more rewarding to think about each and every piece individually and carefully picking them out.

By doing this, you may be reap the rewards of owning a room that is scarily close to perfect, with each furnishing being essential to the overall look it achieves – and not to mention completely unique.

Get arty and ditch the bedroom sets, start sifting through different designs to create a bedroom that is truly compatible with you and your style.

Choosing…

A Bedframe

Beds are often a focal point of the bedroom, and although this is often because of the conglomeration of colourful duvets and fancy pillows that are used, the bedframe alone can work wonders.

Be they low or high, simple or sensational, use the bed frame to showcase what persona you want for your room, whether this is a four-poster extravaganza, or a low, lazy boy that is effortlessly cool, it’s is a really good way of starting your design process and letting all the rest fall into place.

Top tip: Take your room dimensions into consideration, as you don’t want a busy bedframe to take over. BUT, don’t be afraid to get a statement bedframe if you are working within a small space. Four-poster beds can bring attention to the height of the bedroom rather than the length.

A Bedside table

Bedside tables are great companions to have when relaxing in bed, holding all the bedtime essentials. When choosing one, it should understandably work with your bed to create a partnership that is aesthetically pleasing. This does not necessarily mean it should be the shame shape and colour, but only that they compliment one another. If you’re lacking space, why not incorporate your bedside table into a desk or dresser so you can have that handy surface without cluttering up your bedroom.

Wardrobe and drawers

We often keep all different bits and bobs in our bedrooms, which is why storage space is so important to maintain that fresh and clean look. Every bedroom needs a set of drawers and a wardrobe, and if these aren’t already fitted in, you have the job of choosing ones that will not only fit well within the room, but will also compliment the rest of your furnishings. Many people like to keep the wardrobe and drawers a very similar design, but if you cant find any sets that catch your eye, this consistency can be achieved through maintaining the same colour or design. For a more striking look, don’t be a slave to symmetry and mix it up completely, you’ll be surprised how good mismatched furniture can look.

Light fixtures

Light fixtures, although small and seemingly insignificant, can have a huge effect on your bedroom design as a whole. If your bedroom lacks a focal piece in the bedroom, and you’re finding the design a bit neutral and bland, let the light work wonders for you. If simplicity is what you’re craving, let a few little lights twinkle and create the final mood you need to complete your room.

We would all like our bedrooms to be a personal sleepy retreat, strictly for siestas, slumbers and evening snoozes, but this is often not the case. Realistically, we use this space for all different things like working, reading, socializing and spending down time in, which makes picking suitable lighting pretty difficult.

To make this process easier for yourself, you should take a step back and think about your room as a whole. Here are a few things to consider so that you don’t get left in the dark (in both respects!)

Think about what your bedroom functions as, as well as a place of rest.

Your bedroom might contain a desk that you’re often working from, and a television that you like to watch after a hard days work. Both these activities provide completely different lighting, and so it’s important that take all this into account. To prevent your lighting becoming a task, use task lighting…

Look at what lights are already in place, what might compliment them?

One central ceiling light will likely not have the capacity to provide light for all the different things you want to use the room for, although it’s a start. By adding different layers of lights that are concentrated on particular areas of your bedroom, not only is it highly practical, but also potentially very alluring.

Oh, and don’t forget to take natural lighting into account as well!

Question its size and how that might limit your choices

If you have a smaller room, you might want to consider lighting options that are efficient space savers, like sconces and pendant lighting. For the bigger rooms, you might need more than one type of lighting in utilize every corner.

A top tip is to decide where your lights need to go, in order to determine the size it should be.

Reflect on what style and theme you are aiming for

Once you have taken all these things into account, you can begin to get creative. Your bedroom is arguably the one place where you can think greedily and create a personal space that functions in a variety of ways, each of them perfect for you. Make sure that whatever lighting you choose, it is consistent with the image you want to create. There is a mass of different choices and designs, so don’t get lost in a swamp of bright lights, keep that initial design close to mind.

Vamp it up with a floor lamp

Floor lamps are a great way of implementing the task lighting you need, whilst also allowing you to add a touch of your person style to the room. They are very much an accessory in home deco terms, and are particularly useful if you’re not planning on using overhead lighting all the time, as they are often high wattage bulbs that spread their light effectively. On their own by the side of your bed or any other furnishings, they also make a small space very well lit and thus practical for any hands-on work you need to do, whilst still being in the comfort of your own bedroom.

Add panache with the pendant

Pendant lights are a great choice if you are short for space, but you wont find this restriction leaking out and affecting your choice of design. You can go for modest and minimalistic to seriously flamboyant, the choice is yours.

Use by the side of the bed so you can free up bedside table space whilst also getting a very clean and contemporary look, or use one as overhead lighting, hanging low to bring an ambient and focused light onto your bed.

Don’t be afraid to mix up the lengths of your lights to add texture, this will not only add a touch of subtle styling, but can work to your advantage if you want different strengths of lighting for different parts of the room.

For nonchalance, pick a sconce

Sconces and wall lights are ideal for enhancing the atmosphere of your bedroom, whilst also saving up that vital floor room again. They are often simple designs that are unobtrusive but have an effect that is quite the contrary. Use these lights at bedtime for a subtle glow that can be left on when your main lighting isn’t, to create a relaxing ambience. Place them tactically around the bedroom to draw your attention towards a particular space, or a particular piece of deco. If you have a favourite place or piece that needs to be noticed, like the framing of your bed or the well thought out deco that rests on your nightstand – intensify it with a sconce.

Practicality is key

Because the need for different types of light in the bedroom is great, it would be ideal to use a mixture of all of these to really let practicality and presentation fuse together and let you be ready for everything. Sometimes, however, this isn’t always possible and so implementing dimmers into the lighting you do have is a good idea so that you have some form of control.

Bedside lamps come in all shapes and sizes, but to really make the most of yours, you should follow a certain criteria to create the best aesthetic effect. When everything is right, then your bedside table is the ultimate sidekick on cosy nights spent in bed reading, or those lazy mornings when you can wake up slowly.

Know your stuff

To achieve perfection, you have to start with the nitty gritty – this means getting the tape measure out and doing a bit of research, but it will be worth it, we promise!

Firstly you need to consider who the bedroom is for, if you share this space then you will want a light bright enough to illuminate your space, but faint enough to avoid getting some angry looks from the other side of the bed.

Secondly, make sure that the switch for your light is within reaching distance, you don’t want to be getting up to fumble around just as you’re nodding off.

Lastly, don’t purchase a lamp that isn’t compatible with your bedside table, otherwise it might spend more time on your bedroom floor.

All these problems can be addressed just by looking at the length of the lamp, the height of the bed and the lampshade in question.

Depending on the height of your bed, the switch of your lamp should be around 20-30 inches high, just so you can reach out and grab it. This means that ideally, if it is sat on a table, the surface should be at mattress level, although a shorter table and longer lamp and vice versa can achieve the same effect.

Top tip: if you haven’t purchased a lamp or table yet, start with the height of your mattress top and buy accordingly. Allow the top of the lamp to be just below your chin when sat up in bed – to avoid any blinding lights.

Have a vision

Once you’re aware of these tips, you can begin to look at what design will suit your bedroom interior the best.

Although the advice given seems pretty exact, don’t be afraid to use your own initiative and experiment. If you have a big statement four-poster bed, then you’re going to want to find a bold lamp to match the look. For a low down and relaxed bed, a smaller lamp is going to suit your needs better.

It may seem obvious, but pick a lamp that suits your bedroom and stick to one particular theme to avoid a cluttered and messy look. This rule can be bent by getting mismatched lamps that still compliment one another but add a touch of the eccentric, for those who aren’t suckers for symmetry.

Before choosing one, ask yourself, ‘what other lights do I already have?’

By taking this into consideration, you have the advantage of putting together a form of decorative lighting that can be an element of your interior design, as well as a house essential.

Perhaps you could use pendant lighting at the side of your bed, not only to save space, but to bring more shape and texture into the room, or a wall lamp allowing you to put all the bedtime essentials on your table without the clutter.
Although this might not be as practical when it comes to bedside lighting, there are little add-ons that can make the lighting you want, adjustable for all occasions…

Spoil yourself

Light dimmer – to be in control of the mood you want to set

Automatic switch off function – for when you’re feeling lazy

Multi-watt bulb – Fine-tune the light for reading or relaxing.

There has been a revolution in the bedroom, the rule has been scrapped and symmetry doesn’t necessarily mean balance. If you’re struggling for space or you just simply cant choose between two different bedside tables, then don’t panic, because a twist in contemporary design says that you don’t have to.

Create a space that suits your style down to the last detail, mix it up and create an eclectic feel, because your image cannot always be obtainable through design principles!

If you know you’re going for quirky and quaint, or you already own a table you love and are searching for its partner, then here are a few ideas to get you started.

Shape shifters

Believe it or not, when choosing bedside tables you don’t need to be confined to particular shapes, not one bit. In fact, you can create a more balanced look by using two completely contrasting shapes that neutralize the end result. For example, if you have quite a big and sharp bedside table, using a softer, rounder one on the other side can prevent the furniture swallowing your room up and making it feel boxy.

Functional furniture

There is more than meets the eye with mismatched bedside tables and if done right, can be a marriage of both brains and beauty. If you are struggling for space and are still in dire need of storage, then why not allow one bedside table to provide that, whilst keeping the other one low-key and lovely.

Develop this idea further by using a desk as one of your side tables, this is extremely practical and cost-effective if you already want to incorporate a desk into your room, not to mention a great space-saver!

For the perfectionist…

If you’re having difficulty getting used to the idea of having mismatched bedside tables, and cant help but feel that something isn’t right, then there are things you can do to stabilize your look and put your mind to rest.

– Choose tables that are based on a similar style, whether that is traditional, modern or any other, if the theme fits, everything else will fall into place.

– Coordinate the colour, they might be two different shapes all together, but similar tones allow for that coordinative look that lets everyone know it’s all under control.

If it’s the height you are having problems with, then you can incorporate accessories on each table to create a sense of symmetry. Books can be a good way of adjusting your lamps to a similar height whilst maintaining a natural and relaxed look. Other ways of remedying this can be by introducing mirrors or even bedding into the mix that can detract attention from the tables and downplay their differences, for a more subtle display.

Aren’t bedrooms the greatest room of them all? A private space where we spend most of our down time and get that well-needed sleep, which we love so much. What’s more, we can have complete reign over the design of these little sanctuaries, to make sure that they are cosy and well suited to our own personalities.

Deciding that your room needs a makeover is not the hardest part over with, unfortunately, but if your bedroom is looking a bit drab, be sure to use these next few top tips to make the transition as easy as possible.

Firstly, get rid of your clutter! Decorating your bedroom means starting a fresh, and this is only possible once you free yourself from all the unnecessary items you have collected over the years.

If you’re having a thorough makeover and are having a re-paint or choosing a new colour scheme all together, take down the things off your walls and windows too – because you’re going to need to paint.

Move all your furniture. If you’ve got the space in your house, get it out of the room so you have a blank canvas to work on. Otherwise, try moving it all into the middle of your room, enough so you don’t run the risk of having a nasty run in with a piece of furniture.

Once you have done the strenuous part, you can sit down and begin to think about what sort of theme you want for your room… this is the most exciting bit, but try not to get too swamped in one particular theme, as you could end up with a rather cliché design that you wont like a few months later – keep your options open, so that you can make small changes when you change.

More recent bedroom deco has found itself not being a slave to the rule of consistency and this gives you the advantage of really nit picking every texture, colour and piece of furniture to create the perfect look.

Colour Schemes, patterns and textures.

When picking what colour-scheme you want, you don’t have to go for an all-out commitment. It can be more pleasing to use splashes of the colour with your accessories, and this is also a less risky option. By doing this, you can also choose different shades and tones of the colour in a variety of textures and patterns to give the room a really trendy look, don’t shy away from using contrasting patterns and colours for a contemporary feel – you can slowly develop and tweak it until you get a nice balance.

Bedding and cushions

Bedding can play a major part in your bedroom interior, or play the part of the low-key luxury, it all depends on what image you want to create.

Make the bed the focal art piece in a simplistic and neutral room by using a bright and textured duvet and contrasting cushions of all shapes and sizes. If you’re feeling daring, use this style in an already flamboyant room for a real glam slam.

Those who are all about the pale and polished look should keep the bedding simple and minimalist to achieve a timeless design that will emit a certain freshness, which we all crave in the morning.

Bedside table

Bedside tables are the ultimate accessory to accompany your place of rest and are also undeniably practical. Sitting so closely to the bed, it is essential that you find a table that is harmonious with its style so that each compliments one another, but this isn’t as restricted as you might first think.

If you have quite a robust and assertive bed, a rounded and more delicate table can neutralize the room and leave you with a quirky, well-rounded look. This can work the opposite way too, by using a statement side table with a delicate and minimalist bed, which looks rather shabby-chic.

Of course, there isn’t anything wrong with going for a classic style and finding a bedside table that matches your bed and the rest of your room perfectly. There are so many designs to choose from, so make sure it can serve its purpose and save some room for your bedtime brew.

Rug

The floor is often a space that is overlooked when decorating a bedroom, but it has great potential and should be utilized with a rug. Use large and bold prints to reinforce a theme that you want to bring to life, or use a simple and small one to introduce a quaint and picturesque feature in the room. If you don’t like your carpet, simply use one to cover it up – the possibilities are endless.
